About Me

Hi, I’m Matt Jenkins from Dublin, Ohio.

I grew up along the shores of Lake Erie in Lorain and Huron, where lighthouses were always part of the landscape. Those early memories sparked a lifelong appreciation for these remarkable landmarks and the communities they represent.

As an adult, I rediscovered my love for LEGO building after my parents returned a box of my childhood bricks. Looking for a fun challenge, I designed a miniature Ohio Stadium on a 16×16 LEGO plate. I shared it online, and in 2015 my designs were featured on ESPN’s Big Ten Blog. What started as a single model quickly grew into hundreds of custom designs.

Today, more than 12,000 orders later, I still personally design every model using BrickLink Studio before building, testing, and creating the printed instructions by hand. Every Block Lighthouses model is constructed with genuine LEGO® bricks and reflects countless hours of design and refinement.

Creating the Holland Harbor Lighthouse gave me the opportunity to recreate one of the Great Lakes’ most colorful and recognizable landmarks. Known affectionately as “Big Red,” the current lighthouse was built in 1907 and stands at the entrance to the channel connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa. Its bright red exterior and twin-gabled roof, which reflects Holland’s Dutch heritage, make it unlike almost any other lighthouse in America.

Big Red is considered Michigan’s most photographed lighthouse and has become a beloved symbol of Holland. The lighthouse is best viewed from across the channel at Holland State Park, where its bold red profile creates an unforgettable scene against the water, sandy shoreline, and Lake Michigan sunsets.

One of my favorite family traditions is visiting lighthouses with my wife and our three daughters. My daughters like to tease me that I’m in my “Lighthouse Era,” but they’ve also seen how meaningful this project has become. Block Lighthouses is more than a business—it’s a way to celebrate these incredible landmarks and help preserve them for future generations.

That’s why a portion of every sale is donated to local lighthouse preservation organizations, helping support the care, restoration, and preservation of the landmarks that inspire these models. Every build you complete helps keep a small piece of Great Lakes heritage shining for years to come.

Thank you for supporting a small family business and helping preserve America’s lighthouse heritage—one brick at a time.
